Why NOW is a good moment to sell your property in Spain?

moment to sell property in spain

Numerous factors influence the situation of selling a house in Spain and in this article we will try to explain why now is a good moment to sell your Spanish property.

But first, we must summarize the events which have led us to this conclusion.

The alarming shortage of real estate supply in Spain has produced a new inflation of prices. Both, the rental market and the sales market, are in an unbearable situation for the majority of Spaniards who cannot afford to pay for their own roof.

Public discontent is growing and the pressure that this exerts on the country's politics is leading Spain to a transition to an increasingly authoritarian government. The strikes that are increasing throughout the national territory point the finger at several culprits. We could argue about the responsibility of the government, however, we would agree that it is not an enviable situation for anyone in power.

The result is extremely drastic measures recently approved by the current government in Spain. The announcement of imposing a 100% taxation on the purchase of property made by non-EU citizens and adding to the current implementation of laws that have stigmatized tourism as the main culprit, are evidences that are complicating the transparency of the real estate market in Spain.

Who can, who can't? These are questions that are increasingly more difficult to answer. The conclusion of these events could be summarized as follows:

Public discontent + authoritarian policies = UNCERTAINTY

Those who are familiar with the history of the markets will know that uncertainty is one step away from distrust. And if there is something that the financial system does not like, it is distrust. The ruthless inflation born after the relatively recent pandemic events was already a hard blow to the European currency. The citizen normally accustomed to a more or less modest CPI, suddenly sees how his pocket is getting increasingly smaller and smaller.

And when things don't go well, the need to blindly name the culprits is ever greater. Spain is possibly the most beloved country and people on the planet by foreigners. Not only the geographical location, the microclimates, the healthy food and so on are factors that win people's hearts, but also the Spaniards in particular. A friendly people with a philosophy of life that is practically incomprehensible to Nordic mentalities, and despite all the cultural differences, Spain offers its visitors a warm welcome - until now.

Enjoying the most significant economic branch - tourism, the deep need for change falls precisely on Spain's greatest benefactor - the tourist. The ease of marginalizing someone as guilty has seen its rise in the pandemic years and it gives us the feeling that this trend is not abating.

Banners announcing "No to tourism" are equivalent to saying "No to welfare." Of course, the people are trying to express their general discontent and they have the right to do so. However, blaming foreigners will only further harm the country's economy.

That is why selling now would be a reasonable step for property owners in Spain.
